Chihuahuas - Maintenance

Chihuahuas do not need a lot of care. They are a low-maintenance breed due to their small exercise needs and diminutive size. The Chihuahua is a perfect breed for city-dwellers. They are active inside; yet do need a few short walks a day. Their coat does not require much grooming. Both smooth-coated and long-coated Chihuahuas need washing about once a month. It is argued whether one should wash them more often. On the one hand, washing helps to get rid of doggy odor. On the other hand, it removes the natural oils from the skin of the dog and makes the coat look dull. Therefore, do not overdo with washing.

It is essential to regularly check the dog's ears and eyes. Many breed owners have to trim Chihuahua's nails. The dog lives mostly in apartments and does not have a chance to grind off its nails. Therefore, it is recommended to cut the nails with special clippers.

As for diet, the Chihuahua needs a few small meals a day. Keep in mind that the diet of a puppy differs from that of an adult dog. Puppies should get about four small meals a day. The amount of meals is decreased gradually. By the age of twelve months, Chihuahuas should get two meals a day.
