There are a number of local breed clubs in the United States. They operate in the ward of the Chihuahua Club of America. This parent club encourages breeders to follow the recommendations of the AKC and show Chihuahuas in accordance with AKC rules.

The Chihuahua Club of America was established in 1923. It was formed to take care of the welfare of the breed and to be a watchdog for all people involved in owning and in breeding Chihuahuas. Thus, in 1952, the Club suggested distinguishing between two varieties of the breed. From that time on, breeders and owners distinguish between smooth-coated and long-coated dogs.

The Chihuahua Club of America educates prospective buyers on the breed. Club officers acknowledge that not all breeders are responsible. Some breeders try to sell their puppies as soon as possible and try to persuade buyers that their Chihuahuas are the best. They may state that their puppies are the tiniest ones. This is one of the basic points for seeking knowledge before buying. The club assures potential owners that there is no such a thing as the tiny or the pocket Chihuahua. Therefore, do not get hooked by the size of the puppies offered. Acquire much information on Chihuahuas and make the right breeder choice.
